My mother had Alzheimer's for 20 years, and my father kept her at home and took care of her, with aides, the entire time.

Then, at age 90, he fell backward down a stairwell and landed on his head, suffering a Traumatic Brain Injury.

Overnight we had two dementia patients living in my childhood home. My wife and I lived seven hours away but happened to be nearby, and we moved into my parents' home that very day, and never again returned to our former lives. We co-managed their care for six years until both had passed.

It was a rich time that included, along with the familiar horrors, many moments of pure joy, laughter and healing, and I realized that many caregivers miss that part of it and only experience Alzheimer's as a tragic loss.

My recent book, The Silver Lining of Alzheimer's: One Son's Journey Into The Mystery, tells our story, and shows other caregivers the positive possibilities available to anyone who is open to viewing the situation in a new way.

I have also written eight other books, including two picture books for the memory-challenged patients themselves to enjoy. My wife Shari and I live in Red Bank, NJ with our two cats, Shlomo and Nudnick.
